Anonymous: I know this might sound stupid, but I get really self-conscious about not wearing make-up sometimes, but at the same time I don't think I really need it, and I prefer not to wear any. But I was wondering, seeing how a lot of girls wear it, and it makes them look really pretty, do you think it's possible for a girl who doesn't wear any make-up to look just as (or even more) beautiful than a girl who wears make-up? For a girl to look outstandingly beautiful without it?

Hello there, no, it doesn’t sound stupid at all, it sadly sounds absolutely normal.

Of course you don’t need make-up to look “outstandingly beautiful”, I don’t think anyone needs make-up to look beautiful. I think that’s just an unfortunate misconception that has been shoved down our throats by the media ever since we were old enough to be aware of television and toys and films. You look at these women on magazines with seemingly perfect skin, hair, bodies and such but what we fail to recognize is the amount of air brushing that goes into making these women look that way. We’ve been force fed this distorted image of beauty for centuries when you think back to the fashion fads that dominated what women (and men) wore or put on their faces even in Elizabethan times.

However, that being said I don’t think make-up is a bad thing. I don’t think emulating something you’ve seen in a magazine or in a film is a bad thing either if that is what you want to look like because you happen to actually like it. I personally wear make-up on a daily basis because I want to not because I need to. I don’t wear it to impress anyone, I don’t wear it to make me look “beautiful”, I wear it because I just like the way it looks and I think at the end of the day that’s all that really matters. How you perceive yourself.

If you like the way you look without make-up then don’t wear it, don’t let anyone else make you feel pressured to put it on because that’s what the world at large seems to think is beautiful. Do what makes you feel good and what makes you feel confident in yourself because I believe firmly that confidence is attractive and that’s what will make you feel beautiful. I know that most of this probably sounds corny but I don’t think there’s any other way to phrase it. Regardless of what you look like I’m sure you’re beautiful in one way or another, everyone is in very different, lovely, kooky ways and I don’t think anyone, especially the media, should make you feel otherwise.
